2007 Unleashed, Another Look at an Interesting Year in Pictures

Since everyone needs one-

Steve Bruhn - Portfolio and Summary of Past Photo Work

For about ten years, I was a digital photographer and blogger in AMA Supercross on Motocross. I covered about 450 events between 1997 and 2008. I did some other events now and then, some banquets, weddings, and other things.

Every photographer I guess has something they like to emphasize. It may be light, composition, "art" or something else. For me it was be in the right place at the right time. I did mostly sports where people don't stand around and you don't get a second chance! This works for sports, but it makes shooting other events interesting too because there are more candid, unplanned photos.

Where the Photos Went-

Magazines and Newspapers

I was a senior photographer for a monthly and a weekly in the US, and did weekly or monthly racing photos for papers and magazines in Japan (Dirt Cool), Motor Gazet (Belgium), Moto Verte (France), Moto Sprint (Italy), plus one in Australia, England, Switzerland, and Canada.

Here's a pic I did that ran in the New York Times.

Websites

I got started doing weekly web photos for racing sites, like FMF Racing, No Fear, several team sites, Chad Reed's site, Jeremy McGrath's, David Bailey's, David Vuillimen's, Yamaha Motor Corp, American Honda, and several others.

Ads, Books, Products

I did the pics for the "No Limits" MX Calendars by DreamCo for three years. All the pics had to be done at the first national in Sacramento to make it to the publisher in time. I would give Dreamco a CD at the end of the day and they would rush it off to the printer.

Pics went to artists that did action art and paintings. This same pic was an Oakley poster too.

I did a few national ad photos for Oakley. This one was the most well-known. It's James Stewart winning his first supercross championship in 2007 in Salt lake City. This was the moment after he won to go over and greet his dad, Big James. This is a lifetime of dreams fullfilled, for real.

I did some national ads for Fox Racing, DC Shoes, M2R Helmets, and event victory ads for Michelin, Dunlop, Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha and a bunch more.

A Michelin win ad.

I did background action pics for this video game, THQ's "MX vs ATV Unleashed - On the Edge." If you play the game and open the freestyle tracks, my logo is behind the stage or on the stadium walls.

I did the pic for this world supercross poster, which was used in both Holland and Spain.

What I'm Doing Now-

I do photo work on an ad-hoc, freelance basis around Huntsville, AL.

Here's my email...

More Samples-

NASA's Great Moonbuggy Race, held at the Space Museum in April.

This is a pic of Ricky Carmichael that his mom liked. When he moved on to NASCAR, a lot of people saw this pic.

One of the wildest motocross passes ever. This is Carmichael passing James Stewart in the air at Southwick during a battle for the lead at a national. Carmichael actually messed up here. He was planning on shutting off on the face of a jump while following Stewart (#7) but he hit it wide open. He told us later that right here he doesn't know what is going to happen and he was just looking for a place to land.

Huntsville Havoc hockey game I shot in 2009.

Jay Leno had the racing stars on his show a few times and I went along to take stills for the moto folks.

It's amazing the people you run into at the races. This is Evel Knievel who stopped by to meet Ricky Carmichael.

The singer Pink is about to get a riding lesson in Anaheim.

This was probably the most seen, most ripped off, and fastest spreading moto photo ten years ago. Carmichael goes over the side of the track on the very first lap of the national series in 2001. I uploaded the photo from press, and by the end of the day, it was global.

Carmichael winning his first supercross championship.

Squeezed in an NHRA drag race in one time, in Houston.

I shot a Monster Jam once so the promoter would have some printable images.

Architectural Digest ran a story about Ricky Carmichael's home in Tallahassee. This is his billard room. I did most of the covers on the back wall (mostly Cycle News covers).

I still try to get to the Motocross of Nations each year.
